(5). Studies from Japan have also reported an association between travel to India and infection with an S. sonnei clonal group that was multidrug resistant, including resistance to nalidixic acid (6). Furthermore, ciprofloxacin-resistant S. sonnei isolates from foodborne outbreaks in India in 2009 and 2010 (7) had XbaI-PFGE types and resistance profiles visually indistinguishable from those rep...
متن کاملAntimicrobial resistance and PCR-ribotyping of Shigella responsible for foodborne outbreaks occurred in southern Brazil
Little information about Shigella responsible for foodborne shigellosis is available in Brazil. The present study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial resistance and PCR-ribotyping patterns of Shigella isolates responsible for foodborne outbreaks occurred in Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Southern Brazil in the period between 2003 and 2007. Shigella strains (n=152) were isolated from foods and...
متن کاملFrequency, Antimicrobial Resistance and Serotyping of Shigella-Contaminted Food Samples in Foodborne Disease Outbreaks in Iran
Background and Aim: Food-borne diseases, with an upward trend worldwide, are a major public health issue. On the other hand, resistance to antimicrobial agents is also a global problem. Thus, a knowledge of antibiotic resistance is vital for the proper treatment of food-borne diseases. The aims of this study were to determine the frequency, antimicrobial resistance and serotyping of Shigella-co...
متن کاملWhole genome sequencing of Shigella sonnei through PulseNet Latin America and Caribbean: advancing global surveillance of foodborne illnesses
OBJECTIVES Shigella sonnei is a globally important diarrhoeal pathogen tracked through the surveillance network PulseNet Latin America and Caribbean (PNLA&C), which participates in PulseNet International. PNLA&C laboratories use common molecular techniques to track pathogens causing foodborne illness. We aimed to demonstrate the possibility and advantages of transitioning to whole genome sequen...
متن کاملCiprofloxacin-Resistant Shigella sonnei among Men Who Have Sex with Men, Canada, 2010
In 2010, we observed isolates with matching pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns from 13 cases of ciprofloxacin-resistant Shigella sonnei in Montréal. We report on the emergence of this resistance type and a study of resistance mechanisms. The investigation suggested local transmission among men who have sex with men associated with sex venues.
متن کاملDevelopment of Multiplex PCR for Simultaneous Detection of Three Pathogenic Shigella Species
BACKGROUND Shigella species are among the common causes of bacterial diarrhoeal diseases. Traditional detection methods are time-consuming resulting in delay in treatment and control of Shigella infections thus there is a need to develop molecular methods for rapid and simultaneous detection of Shigella spp. In this study a rapid multiplex PCR were developed for simultaneous detection of three ...
